According to Goal.com, de la Fuente stated that Wirtz was the German player he most wanted to recruit for the Spanish national team.

De la Fuente told Bild Sport, "Wirtz is excellent. It's a shame he doesn't have a Spanish passport (laughs). I like his style of play."

Speaking about German football, de la Fuente said, "Germany has a brilliant history in world football, particularly in the 1970s, when both clubs and the national team made a lasting impact. Germany has always produced great players, not just Beckenbauer. As a child, I admired Günter Netzer, who played for Real Madrid; he was an incredible player, and his fantastic passes were remarkable. Paul Breitner also impressed me; he was also an excellent player."
