According to L'Équipe, citing Algerian media outlet DZfoot, 35-year-old Riyad Mahrez has reached an agreement with Qatari club Al-Shamal SC and is expected to sign a one-year contract with an option for a second year.

Mahrez has been a free agent for about three months since leaving Saudi club Al-Ahli in early July. There was some speculation that he might retire, but the Algerian winger is now set to embark on a new chapter of his career in Qatar.
Currently, Mahrez is training in Dubai and maintaining his fitness with the help of a personal trainer. According to DZfoot, barring any unforeseen circumstances, he is expected to undergo a medical examination arranged by Al-Shamal SC next Monday or Tuesday, followed by the official signing of the contract.
Mahrez had previously been linked with several European clubs, but he ultimately chose Al-Shamal SC.
After Algeria's elimination in the round of 16 at the 2022 World Cup, Mahrez announced his retirement from the national team. He made 119 appearances and scored 40 goals for his country.
After the first four rounds of the Qatar Stars League this season, Al-Shamal SC currently sits in third place and has already qualified for the AFC Champions League.
