According to Sponichi, Japan defeated New Zealand 2-1 in the Kirin Cup final. After the match, New Zealand coach Darren Bazeley said, "Japan was too strong."

Bazeley said, "I think we played well and frustrated Japan for long periods. Our counter-attacks created threats against Japan."

He also acknowledged the team's decline in the second half: "We're still a developing team, and it's difficult to maintain our best performance for 90 minutes against a strong opponent like Japan. Japan was too strong, and we eventually ran out of steam."
