According to Mirror, Arsenal legend Charlie Nicholas revealed that Sir Alex Ferguson almost became Arsenal manager but received an offer from Manchester United the very next day.

Nicholas recalled that during the 1986 World Cup, Arsenal approached Ferguson to offer him the manager position. Ferguson told Nicholas at the time that Arsenal had drawn up a contract and he was very impressed with the club. Nicholas believed that Arsenal would give Ferguson full control of the dressing room, which was exactly what the team needed.

Nicholas stated that the next day, Ferguson told him he had accepted a job at Manchester United. Nicholas said he was "heartbroken" hearing the news but understood Ferguson's reasons for choosing Manchester United and thought Arsenal had come close to achieving success.
