Belgian journalist Stéphane Pauwels has criticized Belgium coach Mark van Bommel over his unclear tactics and ineffective player substitutions.

Van Bommel began his tenure positively, with Belgium defeating Italy and Turkey in the UEFA Nations League. However, Belgium subsequently lost 0-1 and 1-4 to France, though the public remained optimistic about the team's performance.
Speaking on French channel LN24, Pauwels criticized Van Bommel and the FA officials who appointed him. He also questioned why his predecessor, Rudi Garcia, had to leave after the World Cup.
Pauwels said: "Our FA has become very 'Flemish-centric,' with Flemish people managing everything, yet they decided to appoint a Dutch coach. He only won the league and cup with Royal Antwerp. We appointed a coach that could just as easily manage Mouscron or Poperinge; those teams would accept him. It should have been a Fleming!"
Regarding the substitutions during Belgium's 1-4 loss to France, Pauwels said: "He was just playing around, and we conceded four goals." He was referring to the period when France scored several goals in quick succession toward the end of the match.
Pauwels added: "Van Bommel made foolish substitutions. After the match, he still claimed that we played well against a strong football nation. If this were the previous coach, the criticism would be much harsher, but now the Belgian FA seems satisfied instead."
Belgium will face Turkey in the UEFA Nations League on November 12, followed by a match against Italy three days later.
