talkSPORT co-host Henry Winter has called for Michael Carrick to drop Tielemans from the starting lineup.

Winter believes this indicates that the Tielemans transfer has not delivered the expected results and has called for the player to be benched for the foreseeable future.

Winter argued that Manchester United wasted money on Tielemans and former Chelsea midfielder Andrey Santos. Santos has not played a minute in the Premier League since September 6, and Winter argues they should have signed a defender instead.

"I thought the game was really poor… I just felt that before Baleba came on, their midfield was too open," he said on talkSPORT's "Sunday Special."

"I still don't understand why they needed Andrey Santos and Tielemans. Tielemans was available and has a good reputation.

"But I think he's getting in the way of Bruno Fernandes, and you need another defensive midfielder alongside Mainoo.

"I think he should be on the bench. I don't think he has the pace, mobility, and defensive awareness that aren't strengths of Fernandes.

"So basically Mainoo is doing everything on his own.

"Baleba and Mainoo are certainly an option, but the money they spent on Santos and Tielemans, I would have much rather used to buy defenders."

Manchester United spent over £150 million this summer, but that money went toward signing three midfielders.

Santos cost £50 million, Tielemans cost £35 million, Baleba cost £70 million, while goalkeeper Karl Darlow joined on a free transfer.

They didn't sign a single defender, which Winter believes has cost them this season.

Winter then went on to discuss Tielemans and admitted he enjoyed watching him at Leicester City and Aston Villa.

However, after Casemiro's departure, he questioned whether signing Tielemans was the right choice for Manchester United.

"I suppose they looked at an available player with a good reputation, and they clearly wanted to strengthen the midfield this summer," he said.

"But with Casemiro leaving, they needed a more defensively-minded midfielder."

Winter then called for Baleba to start ahead of Tielemans, adding: "Baleba makes absolute sense, and I'm surprised he hasn't started.

"He needs to start. There's not much pace in defense, and he needs to protect that defense."

Summing up Manchester United's poor start following a difficult transfer window, Winter concluded: "Manchester United fans have been incredible; they've backed the team.

"But they know it's partly a recruitment issue, partly an ownership issue, and partly an issue of targeting midfield when the defense should have been strengthened."
