Toby Savin ended up joining Shrewsbury Town after twice missing out on a dream move to Manchester United.

Savin was playing for Accrington Stanley when the opportunity to move to United first presented itself in January. The 23-year-old goalkeeper had been lined up to become a back-up to Andre Onana and Altay Bayindir, with Tom Heaton nearing retirement and Nathan Bishop leaving for Sunderland.

But Savin, who had been scouted by Newcastle and Tottenham as well, ended up failing a medical to scupper his chances of a move in the middle of the 2023/24 season. Another chance presented itself in the summer after he was released by Accrington, but The Sun reports he once again couldn’t get past the medical checks.

Savin has struggled with a shoulder injury of late and featured just nine times in League Two last season. The injury robbed him of a move to United, but Shrewsbury were not put off, signing him on a two-year deal this summer.

“Toby attracted interest from clubs higher up the leagues,” Shrewsbury manager Paul Hurst said. “He is a player with plenty of potential and has all the attributes to be a really good goalkeeper. Our job is to make sure he fulfils that and becomes the best version of himself.”

Savin has not been able to join his new team-mates in pre-season yet, with the injury still keeping him off the pitch. He missed Shrewsbury’s first two friendlies against Birmingham and Brackley Town.

“Toby, nothing is amiss there, everything is how we expected,” Hurst said. “Toby is gradually getting fitter. We will see how he goes next week. He won’t be involved on Tuesday night, but as I said that was our understanding anyway.”

United have been busy in the summer transfer window, landing Bologna striker Joshua Zirkzee and Lille defender Leny Yoro so far. Zirkzee has replaced Anthony Martial, who left on a free transfer at the end of last month, in a £36.5million deal, while Yoro has taken Raphael Varane’s place for a fee which could reach £58m.

"It is very good that we are also there on the front foot, we are very proactive," Erik ten Hag said on Saturday. "So, [the] leadership is doing a great job in this moment and that's how we want to act as United. We are highly ambitious and you have to be on the front foot and be ready for the season. The earlier you get your players in then [the faster] you can work on your team."

United are now chasing a midfielder, with Paris Saint-Germain’s Manuel Ugarte and Benfica’s Joao Neves among the options. They are also in negotiations with Bayern Munich over the signing of centre-back Matthijs de Ligt.
