According to an exclusive report from the Sunderland Echo, Sunderland are in talks with Sporting CP regarding the signing of Mozambican winger Geny Catamo, as the club hopes to bring the attacking player to the Premier League.

The report states that Sunderland have included the 25-year-old Catamo on their target list, and sporting director Florent Ghisolfi continues to strengthen attacking options for head coach Régis Le Bris. Sunderland are particularly keen to improve the quality of their right-wing attack, and Catamo can play both as a winger and a wing-back.

No agreement has been reached yet, but negotiations are underway for the Sporting CP attacker to join Sunderland at the Stadium of Light.

Catamo joined Sporting CP's academy system in 2019 from Portuguese lower league team Amora and made his first-team debut in December 2021 against Portimonense. He was previously loaned to Vitória Guimarães and Marítimo before returning to Sporting CP and gradually becoming an important member of the team.

To date, Catamo has made 130 appearances for Sporting CP in all competitions, contributing 21 goals. In the 2025-26 season, he scored 7 goals. The 2023-24 season was his breakout season, where he scored 6 goals in 41 games, including a brace in the 2-1 Lisbon derby win against Benfica.

In December 2023, Catamo renewed his contract with Sporting CP until 2028, which includes a €60 million (approximately £51 million) release clause. However, this amount does not necessarily reflect Sporting CP's actual asking price for him this summer, as both parties are still negotiating the transfer fee.

Catamo was born in Maputo, the capital of Mozambique, and played for the Maxaquene and Black Bulls academies in Mozambique in his early years before moving to Portugal to develop his career. He also trained in the FC Porto academy and had a trial opportunity with Benfica early in his career.

In 2019, Catamo made his debut for the Mozambique national team and scored in a 2-0 victory against Mauritius. Since then, he has gradually become a regular member of the national team and helped Mozambique secure their first-ever Africa Cup of Nations victory by defeating Gabon in December 2025.

With his speed, direct breakthrough ability, and one-on-one dribbling skills, Catamo could provide new attacking options for Sunderland in both the Premier League and Europa League competitions. Additionally, he is a teammate of Sunderland left-back Reinildo Mandava in the Mozambique national team.
