Gerrard believes that Tottenham's failure to sign a reliable striker in the last summer transfer window will cost them a top-four finish in the Premier League this season.

"The team has genuinely strengthened in certain areas," Gerrard said in an interview following Tottenham's defeat to Aston Villa.

"I think the midfield, which is the driving force of the team, has improved with signings like Tonali, Fernandes, and Bentancur. In my opinion, this midfield is quite competitive. There's also Gallagher, who had the opportunity to play today. Remembering his performance at Anfield, I believe he deserved to start today. So I don't think the midfield is the main problem.

"The team's defense is somewhat weak and lacks stability; they concede far too many goals.

"Opponents only need to play a simple long ball, and if the two center-backs cannot deal with that, trouble emerges, and defensive issues need to be addressed urgently.

"Tottenham has genuinely made progress in certain areas, but the biggest issue lies in attack: the team lacks goals, lacks elite strikers who can score easily, and lacks consistent goalscorers.

"I say this with no disrespect, but Tottenham's attack is not lacking strong and influential players. But who can score 20 goals for the team?

"The recruitment team needs to ask themselves: 'We have failed to sign a player who can score 20 goals in a season.'

"If you lack such a player in your lineup, and your defense keeps conceding goals, then Tottenham fans should genuinely be worried. Simply put: either you can keep clean sheets to secure your position, or you have a top striker like Kane who consistently scores the goals needed to keep you high in the table. If your defense is weak and you lack a clinical finisher, then the outlook is not promising."

When asked whether he agreed with De Zerbi's view that Tottenham can compete for a top-four spot this season, Gerrard replied: "Based on today's performance, I don't agree.

"I disagree with that view. I have great respect for De Zerbi; he's a top coach. But I think he may be saying that as a psychological tactic, to apply pressure on the Tottenham squad."
