Arsenal fought their way back to draw 1-1 with Manchester United thanks to a goal deep in second-half stoppage time from Smilla Holmberg.

United seemed set to claim their first Women's Super League under Eva Olid, on the back of a 5-0 humbling at home to Chelsea last week.

However, Arsenal found a way late on to preserve their unbeaten start to the season.

United started brightly, with Elisabeth Terland missing two good chances in the opening stages, with Arsenal goalkeeper Misa Rodriguez in fine form.

Mariona Caldentey and Stina Blackstenius went close for the Gunners, but United went ahead in the 67th minute.

Julia Zigiotti Olme broke the deadlock, capitalising on a poor pass from Georgia Stanway.

Yet Arsenal found an equaliser in the fifth minute of stoppage time, when Leah Williamson swung in a cross and Holmberg volleyed home.

Building blocks for Man Utd

It has been a tough start to the season for United and their new boss Olid, but even though they suffered late heartbreak, this was a much more resilient display.

"Last week [against Chelsea] was awful, we hold our hands up," Maya Le Tissier told Sky Sports after the game. "We were hurting, got to training and came out a different side, we had some honest conversations with the players and the staff, how we want to play. We came out a different team tonight, but gutted to concede.

"We need to be confident, we've had a difficult run of results recently, not our standards at all. We need to be competing in the game. One game to build on, another game on Wednesday. It's good."

United did only have four shots, albeit they hit the target with three of them, and Arsenal will feel they were at least worthy of a point, considering they accumulated 1.98 expected goals to the Red Devils' 0.53 xG.

In avoiding defeat, Arsenal made it 20 WSL games unbeaten, which is their longest such streak in the competition (W14 D6).

The Gunners also remain unbeaten at home under Renee Slegers in the top flight (W16 D5) and equalled the third-longest home run without defeat overall in the WSL (Manchester City between November 2021 and October 2023).
