Barcelona issued an official statement regarding reports that UEFA had reopened the Negreira case investigation, clearly stating that UEFA has not initiated any new investigation procedures against Barcelona, and that the investigation into the case, which began in 2023, has never been suspended. The club has always cooperated with all requests.
Regarding reports that UEFA has reopened investigation procedures due to the Negreira case, Barcelona wishes to clarify the following:
UEFA has not initiated any new investigation procedures against Barcelona. This procedure was initiated in 2023, at which time two investigators were appointed, who have been carrying out actions they deemed appropriate ever since. The club has always cooperated with all their requests. This procedure has not been reopened because it was never closed.
UEFA's announcement confirms receipt of documents submitted by Barcelona, which the investigators will evaluate within the framework of the ongoing investigation. The announcement explicitly mentions an "ongoing" investigation and review twice. Therefore, the announcement does not declare the opening, reopening, or activation of any procedure, nor does it make any statement regarding the substance or value of the submitted documents.
It is up to the investigators to decide what actions they deem appropriate with regard to these documents. To date, they have not made any new requests to Barcelona, nor have they forwarded Barcelona's complaint to the club. When they do, the club will respond in due course, as it has done to date.
In accordance with the applicable law in this area, this procedure is subject to what is determined by the ongoing criminal proceedings in Spain, and will continue to be so.
Since the investigation began, Barcelona has successfully obtained UEFA licenses without any impediment and has continued to participate in its competitions.
For ease of comparison, we reproduce the full text of UEFA's original announcement:
"UEFA confirms that it has received a large number of documents submitted by Barcelona, which relate to the ongoing investigation into Barcelona, concerning matters related to José María Enríquez Negreira, former Vice-President of the Technical Committee of Referees of the Royal Spanish Football Federation (the so-called 'Negreira case').
UEFA's Ethics and Disciplinary Investigators have also received these latest documents, which they will evaluate in the ongoing review."
Barcelona reiterates its full cooperation with the competent authorities and requests that news reports about this procedure maintain rigor and accuracy.
