Wayne Rooney criticized Gravenberch after the midfielder received a second "stupid" yellow card during Liverpool's match against Man City on Sunday, reducing the Reds to 10 men. Man City subsequently defeated Liverpool 3-0 at Anfield, with Haaland, Doku, and Foden quickly capitalizing on their numerical advantage against a side already weakened by absences and injuries.

Rooney told BBC's Match of the Day: "I thought the first yellow card was harsh. I think clearly he's trying to win the ball, Elliott-Anderson's touch wasn't great either, and then he just catches his opponent lightly, a light touch on the heel that brings him down, so perhaps that shouldn't have been a yellow card."
"But for me, the second yellow card is correct. Once you've been cautioned, you put yourself in a position where you're likely to pick up another yellow and get sent off, so the second yellow was a bit naive and stupid."
Presenter Kelly Cates added: "We should also point out that it's not about the force of the challenge, but about stopping a promising attack, which is why it's considered a yellow card."
Former Tottenham defender Toby Alderweireld, also appearing as a pundit, explained: "Yes, absolutely, because I think Gravenberch thought he could get the ball first, but Doku was too quick, he got there first and then there's a small error, but again he stopped a promising attack, which is why he got the yellow card."
