L'Équipe reported that Fabian Ruiz, with his excellent off-the-ball movement and quick decision-making, has become an indispensable midfielder for Paris Saint-Germain and the Spanish national team. He excels at using intelligent positioning to escape opponent pressure, avoiding unnecessary physical contact, and maintains team balance through positional awareness, linking play, and space occupation. Although his technical attributes are not flashy and his on-field contributions are not always spectacular, his consistent performance in important matches and excellent team value make him a crucial guarantee for the team's success.

Fabian Ruiz has become an indispensable player for Paris Saint-Germain and the Spanish national team. He possesses a unique playing style: he can still have a significant impact on the field by avoiding physical confrontations.

Had Real Sociedad not crossed his path two and a half years ago, would Fabian Ruiz have become a key player for Champions League holders Paris Saint-Germain and the 2024 European Championship and 2026 World Cup winners Spain?

For the 30-year-old midfielder, the Champions League Round of 16 clash against Real Sociedad was a turning point in his career. In that match, to give the team better technical control during transitions from defense to attack, Paris Saint-Germain opted to deploy him as a defensive midfielder instead of Ugarte. However, in the first leg at Parc des Princes, the team's first-half performance was poor, and at halftime, Ruiz swapped positions with Vitinha.

This adjustment didn't completely change the game, but Paris Saint-Germain ultimately secured the victory and discovered a new midfield combination.

That evening, Claude Puel, invited by the newspaper to analyze the match, acknowledged this adjustment: "Vitinha is more agile, better at escaping pressure and carrying the ball out from the back under duress, and knows how to receive the ball with his body open. Fabian Ruiz is an excellent ball-controller, but he takes longer to turn."

Luis Enrique added: "We had better control of possession."

From that night on, Paris Saint-Germain established its long-term midfield configuration: Vitinha as the deep-lying playmaker, with the other two players taking on more central midfield responsibilities—currently Fabian Ruiz and João Neves.

Ruiz has gradually found the position that suits him best. Previously, both at Paris Saint-Germain and Napoli, his role at the club was never clearly defined, as he had tried almost every midfield position.

Now, he plays slightly further forward, particularly active in the left half-space. This area is better suited to his unique player characteristics—an ability to evade contact.

Last season, he was the Ligue 1 player with the fewest duels per 90 minutes, with only 3.9. He instinctively avoids physical confrontations. Although this trait is less evident in the Champions League, it precisely highlights the strengths of this Andalusian midfielder.

His off-the-ball movement is exceptional, allowing him to receive the ball often already clear of opponent pressure. In Paris Saint-Germain's 2-2 away draw against Rennes on August 23, he seemed to have an almost remarkable amount of time when delivering a cross for Ferran Torres. Throughout the sequence, he appeared to be instructing teammates on how to make their runs, reminiscent of Toni Kroos's style of play at Real Madrid.

He also processes the ball quickly, usually passing it on with no more than two touches. When making forward runs, he relies more on off-the-ball movement than dribbling.

At Paris Saint-Germain, Ruiz covers a lot of ground, but he rarely makes high-intensity sprints because his primary focus is maintaining team balance, filling gaps, and occupying the spaces left by teammates.

Former French international midfielder Vincent Guérin commented: "He doesn't have any particularly outstanding individual abilities; what's truly exceptional is his intelligence in off-the-ball movement, both in relation to opponents and teammates. He always appears in a position where he can receive the ball, which is extremely valuable for achieving the tactical requirements a coach wants the team to fulfill."

Even highly skilled coaches haven't always immediately recognized Ruiz's value. Luis Enrique didn't call him up for the 2022 World Cup, while Luis Campos brought him to Paris Saint-Germain for 20 million euros a few months earlier. For a club of Paris Saint-Germain's stature, this transfer fee seemed more like the price for a rotation player.

Guérin recalled: "For example, Clément Chantôme was a player like that during his academy days: no matter where the coach deployed him, he adapted to his role. These players aren't flashy, but they are very effective. What they do is not always easy to notice, but their statistics are outstanding. With players like that, you know the team's chances of winning are higher. They can bring victory to the team, even if people don't always realize it."

Since 2024, Ruiz has become a regular starter in important matches. His importance was fully demonstrated in May when, despite having just recovered from a knee injury, Paris Saint-Germain started him in the Champions League semi-final second leg away to Bayern Munich. That match ended 1-1, with Paris Saint-Germain advancing 5-4 on aggregate.

For Ruiz, the most telling statistic is even reflected directly in match results: whenever this Spanish player is on the field, Paris Saint-Germain and the Spanish national team are almost unbeatable.

He has remained unbeaten in 52 consecutive matches for the Spanish national team; at Paris Saint-Germain, he has extended their Ligue 1 unbeaten streak to 51 matches, lasting from May 2023 to April 2025.

Ruiz is like a somewhat paradoxical good luck charm. In the league, his duel success rate is just over 50%, and even below 50% in aerial duels. Given his height of 1.89 meters, such statistics are surprising, as height typically provides an advantage. However, when he contests a header, his objective is not necessarily to win possession directly, but rather to ensure the team can compete for the second ball. Furthermore, he is not always Paris Saint-Germain's designated target for attacking set-pieces.

He can influence games without eye-catching statistics. Ruiz is the fifth player in the 21st century to win both the Champions League and the World Cup in the same season, an achievement previously accomplished by Roberto Carlos in 2002, Sami Khedira in 2014, Raphaël Varane in 2018, and Julián Álvarez in the 2022-2023 season.

Perhaps he is the clearest embodiment of Paris Saint-Germain's team spirit: a true team player.
