Mikel Arteta has claimed Max Dowman must wait to get his chance in Arsenal's team, but says the youngster will get his opportunity.

Dowman made Premier League history last season, when he became the youngest goalscorer in the competition.

In October, he became the youngest player to start a match for a Premier League team in all competitions, at the age of 15 years and 302 days.

Then, in May, he made more history, becoming the youngest player to start a Premier League game.

However, Dowman has not yet featured for a single minute in the first team this season. But, ahead of Arsenal's EFL Cup tie with Ipswich Town, Arteta said the winger will get his chance.

"He will have his chance," Arteta said of Dowman. "He will have his minutes, and he will have to earn them like anybody else. 

"We know the talent that we have, we know the players that we have there, and we need to help him and find a way to make sure that he continues to develop and help the team."

Arsenal have a 100% record this season, with the reigning Premier League champions winning all of their top-flight fixtures and their sole Champions League outing so far.

The Gunners were runners-up to Manchester City in last season's EFL Cup, and Arteta has no doubt that his team have the will to keep their winning start going.

He added: "We'll look at the players' eyes and they will say they want to play, and ‘I want to win a game, and I want to improve.'

"They will be willing for more because I know the boys."

Arsenal have progressed from 21 of their last 23 third-round ties in the EFL Cup, only falling at this stage in 2014-15 (v Southampton) and 2022-23 (v Brighton) in this period.
