Brobbey has performed significantly more effectively in Sunderland's colours. This is the conclusion of fitness coach Patrick Woerst, who has worked closely with the striker for an extended period. Brobbey recently scored a hat-trick against Manchester City.

Woerst analyzes match footage with Brobbey in detail after every two matches. With Premier League fixtures, they sometimes connect four times a month. When Brobbey was still in the Netherlands, he would also travel to Rotterdam for individual training sessions.
"Brian doesn't necessarily have to be faster or stronger," Woerst said in an interview with ESPN. "People might view this as an improvement in fitness, or say he's stronger and more mature, but he's also become far more effective in his play, so he engages in direct confrontations much less frequently."
Woerst trains Brobbey on observation and ball-handling skills, similar to how he coaches Dumfries and Gravenberch. "When he was at Ajax, he would often hold the ball in place after controlling it. He would stop the ball and then brace his body. This would lead to a contested situation because defenders would press close, and you'd end up in a confrontation. That's very energy-consuming every time."
From the fitness coach's perspective, Brobbey now thinks more strategically, and the striker tries to avoid contested situations. "Now, many times he controls the ball while moving, which allows him to dribble away from opponents and evade defenders. Then he passes and moves back into position. Or he plays a one-touch pass and continues running forward. This way, he avoids ground battles much less frequently, which helps conserve energy. That's why people think he looks faster. Of course, he can also play longer because he expends less energy."
Woerst knows that the intensity of the Premier League is much higher than in the Netherlands. "When you leave the Eredivisie for any league abroad, the intensity is higher. You have to adapt."
According to Woerst, attributing Brobbey's progress to better fitness or greater strength would be inaccurate. "At Ajax, he had countless ground battles. At some point, after an hour, he would be exhausted. Now that's not the case because he engages in fewer confrontations. His most important change is playing smarter, which affects his energy expenditure."
