Former Tottenham manager André Villas-Boas has revealed an inside story about Man Utd's failed attempt to sign Gareth Bale.

In the summer of 2013, Bale joined Real Madrid in a world record transfer fee of £85m, signing a 6-year contract worth £300,000 per week. This surpassed the £80m Real Madrid paid Man Utd in 2009 to sign Cristiano Ronaldo.

Despite missing out on Bale at the time, former Man Utd executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward never abandoned hopes of signing him, though the deal never materialized. It was just one of many failed transfer attempts by Woodward, the Glazer family's favored figurehead.

During an interview, Villas-Boas confirmed that Man Utd had offered £120m, but Bale rejected it.

Villas-Boas said: "Gareth had an offer from Real Madrid at that time."

"I remember Man Utd came in at the last minute to try to sign him. Levy came to my office; they were willing to pay £120m, but Gareth didn't want to go. He wanted to go to Real Madrid."
