Sandro Tonali insisted Tottenham are "alive and well and positive" despite a dreadful start to the Premier League season.

Spurs are bottom of the Premier League after picking up just two points from five games, failing to score in four of them.

This is Spurs' worst start to a Premier League season after five games, with two points and a goal difference of -6, eclipsing their 2008-09 start (two points, -3 goal difference).

After their defeat to Aston Villa before the international break, Spurs have lost 22 home league games since the start of 2024-25, just one fewer than in their previous four seasons combined (23).

Despite registering the ninth-most shots in the league this season (71), Spurs' expected goals tally of 5.0 is the third-lowest in the division.

Nevertheless, Tonali, who is currently on international duty with Italy, is feeling optimistic about Spurs' season.

"Football is very strange; in 10 days, everything can change from negative to positive," said the midfielder, who joined for a reported £100m from Newcastle United in the summer.

"I would classify our current situation as a club as negative in terms of results but positive for football.

"We're having fun and creating chances. If you don't score in football, you lose. We're not in the doldrums; we're alive and well, and we're positive."

Spurs, who have also been knocked out of the EFL Cup, face a tough run of fixtures after the international break, travelling to Manchester United and Chelsea either side of a home match with Coventry City.
