According to Footmercato, the 1986 FIFA World Cup "Hand of God" match ball will be auctioned in the United States from August 21 to 23, with a starting price of $2.5 million.

The ball associated with one of the most iconic moments in FIFA World Cup history is about to change hands. It was used in the 1986 quarter-final match between Argentina and England, which Argentina won 2-1.

In that match, Diego Maradona scored the famous "Hand of God" goal with this ball. The item will be auctioned in the United States from August 21 to 23, with a starting price of $2.5 million. AFP estimates its value could exceed $10 million, or approximately 2.15 million euros.

Minutes later, Maradona scored another spectacular goal from inside his own half, cementing that match in history. The ball has been kept by Tunisian referee Ali Bin Nasser for over 30 years.

Ali Bin Nasser stated that he took the ball home after the match and had the assistant referee sign it. Heritage Auctions said the item has since been authenticated by two sports memorabilia specialist organizations. In 2022, Maradona's jersey from the same match sold for $9.3 million.
