Trent Alexander-Arnold is continuing to struggle out in Spain under Jose Mourinho at Real Madrid

Trent Alexander-Arnold will reunite with fellow Liverpool academy graduate Curtis Jones in the Champions League on Tuesday, when Real Madrid host Inter Milan at the Santiago Bernabeu.

Alexander-Arnold has started just one game for Real this season, assisting against Malaga in a 4-0 win. The defender has continued his struggle for consistent performances out in Spain after leaving Liverpool last year.

Meanwhile, Jones has been enjoying life in Italy despite playing just 70 minutes so far. The midfielder came on in the second half against Napoli this weekend and, despite going 2-0 down, helped Inter deliver a comeback and win 3-2, maintaining the club's 100 per cent record this season.

Discussing the victory, Jones said: "I'm absolutely over the moon. I am so happy to be part of a team and a club like this. It was obviously a hard game, but the lads stuck to the game plan. The fans were great throughout the whole match, and that is why we won."

Over in Spain, Alexander-Arnold came on for the last 30 minutes against Real Betis and watched Kylian Mbappe's penalty get saved as they fell to a 1-0 loss on the weekend. Both former Reds are off to different starts this season, but this reunion will likely come at the perfect time for the elder academy graduate.

Jose Mourinho has long-term plans for the defender, stating that he believes Alexander-Arnold is better suited to playing with new signing Yan Diomande. He told AS: "The team has always been good. I haven't seen the stats, but we created a lot. We missed three or four clear chances and their goalkeeper made three or four impressive saves.

"I didn't make changes because I wasn't happy; they were to take off the players who had been booked. It's better to play with Trent and Yan Diomande than with Denzel Dumfries."

With Diomande still a teenager, Alexander-Arnold may see his playing time remain sparse at Real. The right-back was linked with a spectacular return to Anfield this summer amid Andoni Iraola's pursuit of defenders.

As rumours continued to heighten, the 27-year-old admitted that he will always call Liverpool "home" in his heart. Alexander-Arnold told the Mirror in August: "I still watch every [Liverpool] game. I support them. I want to see them do well. I enjoy watching them, and there will always be a place in my heart for Liverpool, no matter what.

"It is home to me. It’s the place that gave me the opportunities to go and do what I’ve done, and I will always love it. It’s always a place that I’ll call home."
