According to Bild, Borussia Mönchengladbach's 17-year-old talent Wael Mahja has decided to represent Germany and will receive his first call-up to the German U21 national team.

According to the report, Mahja's family previously communicated with German U21 coach Antonio Di Salvo, and Mahja ultimately decided to accept the German Football Association's invitation to represent Germany.
Born in Mettmann near Düsseldorf, Mahja has Moroccan parents, which attracted the attention of the Moroccan Football Federation. In a previous interview with Bild, Mahja stated that he had not yet made a final decision on which country he would represent.
Mahja previously made five appearances for various German youth teams starting from U16 level. On November 18, 2024, he played for Germany U18 against Denmark and scored in the team's 2-0 victory. After that, he did not receive any further call-ups from the German Football Association.
Now Mahja has decided to return to the German youth national team. It is understood that his decision has also caught the attention of Germany's new national team coach Jürgen Klopp.
The German U21 team will face Latvia away on September 26, Malta away on September 30, and Georgia at home in Bielefeld on October 6 in their upcoming European Championship qualifiers.
