Manchester United got their Women's Super League campaign up and running as goals from Elisabeth Terland and Andrea Medina clinched a 2-1 win over West Ham. 

After failing to win their first three league fixtures, it proved to be the fourth time lucky for Eva Olid, with the Red Devils deserving of their first WSL triumph in 2026-27. 

Terland needed just nine minutes at the Progress with Unity Stadium to give United the lead, with the Norwegian rising highest to head in Anna Sandberg's inviting corner. 

Viviane Asseyi then squandered two chances to get West Ham level, with Ella Toone's strike from distance comfortably held by Constance Picaud-Inconnu at the other end. 

Picaud-Inconnu then produced a stunning stop to tip Hanna Lundkvist's header over the crossbar, before Medina thundered against the woodwork early in the second half. 

Terland then saw an attempt brilliantly saved down low by Picaud-Inconnu, but United's pressure eventually told in the 72nd minute when Medina picked out the top-right corner after seeing her initial effort blocked by Saki Kumagai. 

But after United failed in their attempts to add further gloss to the scoreline, Asseyi was tripped inside the area by Sandberg, with the West Ham forward stepping up to send Phallon Tullis-Joyce the wrong way from 12 yards, though the Red Devils held on for the win. 

Terland a head above the rest

United arrived into Sunday's clash with the threat of becoming only the second of the WSL's 'big four' teams to fail to win their first four games of the season, but they delivered a dominant display from start to finish, despite a late lapse in concentration. 

They are now unbeaten in their last 13 league games against West Ham (W9 D4), with Terland's opener setting them on their way. Since her WSL debut in September 2022, only Khadija Shaw (31) has scored more headed goals in the competition than Terland (10).

United had attempted just 10 shots in the WSL this season ahead of facing the Hammers, and they bettered that in just one game here. They fired off 15 attempts, worth an expected goals (xG) value of 1.67, compared to West Ham's tally of 1.13 from their nine efforts. 

Medina was the particular standout for the Red Devils, scoring her first goal for the club. She also finished with team-high totals for chances created (four), crosses (six), touches in the opposition box (11), and duels won (eight).
