Former Liverpool and England midfielder Danny Murphy discussed the potential punishments Manchester City could face if found guilty on 114 of the 115 charges.

Danny Murphy believes that if Manchester City is found guilty on 114 of the 115 Premier League financial charges, the club will face a "triple whammy of punishment."

However, the former Liverpool midfielder stated that stripping the team of any titles would be pointless.

Multiple media outlets report that an independent commission has found Manchester City guilty on all but one of the 115 charges, which relate to alleged rule breaches between 2009 and 2018.

The Premier League will now determine appropriate sanctions. Reports suggest the club was informed of the outcome at a meeting on Thursday.

"I was genuinely surprised to hear they'd been found guilty on all but one charge, considering how strong they've always been and how they've always maintained their innocence," Murphy said.

"I expect them to appeal, and contrary to reports, my gut feeling is that this process could drag on for quite some time.

"I don't think stripping them of titles they've already won makes sense, because awarding the title to the runner-up years later won't satisfy anyone. The fans, players, and staff never experienced lifting the trophy, so it seems pointless to me."

The investigation into Manchester City began in November 2018 following leaked documents and has continued throughout Pep Guardiola's tenure, during which the club has won multiple major honours. Guardiola is set to leave this summer after ten years in charge.

During this period, Liverpool was their main rival in domestic competitions. The Reds won one Premier League title but finished second twice, despite accumulating over 90 points, being edged out by Manchester City.

Murphy added: "My feeling is that the Premier League has to be tough, but they are now in a difficult position because any form of relegation would weaken the league and reduce its competitiveness.

"But even so, I think there's a high probability they'll relegate Manchester City to the Championship, impose a transfer ban, and issue a record-breaking fine to send a message to world football.

"I believe their most likely course of action is a heavy points deduction this season, coupled with a record fine and a transfer ban of one to two years."
