According to Calcio e Finanza, following the final stages of Roma's new stadium project in Pietralata, Rome Mayor Roberto Gualtieri stated that he also hopes the Lazio project to renovate the Stadio Flaminio can be accelerated, with the aim of declaring it of public interest by the end of this year.

Gualtieri told Radio Radio: "We hope to declare the Lazio project of public interest by the end of this year. The requirements put forward by the cultural heritage department can be resolved."
Currently, Lazio still needs to adjust its plan based on the requirements of the cultural heritage department. These include retaining the covered stands and ensuring that the pillars of the new second tier do not obstruct the external profile of the Stadio Flaminio. These requirements have prompted Lazio's technical team to significantly modify the initial design, but this represents only a temporary slowdown in the project's progress, not a halt.
Gualtieri stated: "The preliminary service conference has yielded positive results while also raising some requirements. However, the project can be adjusted, and the club is currently in communication with the cultural heritage department. Once this phase is complete, we can declare the project of public interest, which is a prerequisite for advancing subsequent procedures, including the final design and the decisive service conference."
Regarding the timeline for final approval, Gualtieri said: "We believe that final approval will not take a long time. What is the current condition of the Stadio Flaminio? It's shameful—an abandoned architectural masterpiece, unused for a long time, and located right in the city center."
Gualtieri then discussed Roma's new stadium project in Pietralata. He confirmed that construction is currently planned to officially begin in March 2027, with the new stadium expected to be operational between 2029 and 2030.
Gualtieri stated: "After so much talk and so many disappointing attempts, this stadium will really be built this time. Previous Roma new stadium projects have gone through a series of failures, and we don't want to make mistakes again. But the stadium that Roma, under the Friedkin family, wants to build will be very beautiful and compact—relatively small in scale—thus truly creating a stadium full of cheering fans. The Curva Sud will feature a wall-like design and offer excellent viewing angles."
Gualtieri finally emphasized that the new stadium is not just a sports facility: "I also want to emphasize that the stadium will become the core of an entire area redevelopment project, and this area will eventually become a gem. A public park will be built here, accessible by metro and train, and of course by car, as new parking lots will also be constructed. It will replace the current dilapidated area, where there was almost nothing before, only some unauthorized structures."
