Newcastle midfielder Nico Gonzalez spoke to Sky Sports about his decision to leave Manchester City for Newcastle this summer, his feelings about his new club, and the current situation at his former club.

Tell us about your decision to join Newcastle. I imagine it surprised some people, given you left Manchester City when Newcastle had already lost several key players.
I actually see it the opposite way. It was a very good opportunity for me. Manchester City is obviously a top club, but I think Newcastle has delivered exceptional performances in recent years and has even greater potential ahead. So I believe we're a top-tier team, and I'm really enjoying my time here. Ultimately, I don't think the most important thing is having to play for the "best club" or anything like that. What matters most is enjoying football and striving to be the best player I can be.
At Manchester City, it's very difficult to become the core, the most important player in the team. But since arriving at Newcastle, you've already looked like one of the key players. Do you enjoy this added responsibility, or do you think you will?
I don't really like talking about who's the core of the team, because things can change very quickly. Of course, since arriving here, it's been fantastic to receive the trust of the entire coaching staff, all the fans, and every teammate. That motivates me even more to try to give my best.
You just mentioned the fans, which reminds me of your presentation night. You came out of the tunnel wearing a scarf, ready to be introduced to the Newcastle supporters. You looked very emotional that night.
Yes, I was pleasantly surprised in that moment. So many emotions came together at once: leaving Manchester City, coming here, and then realizing I'd made the best decision of my life. I think life here is wonderful, and I'm really enjoying it.
What do you think about the team's start to the season?
The team is still in a building phase, which actually excites me even more because starting a new process isn't always easy. But we've already done some very good things, and there's still plenty of room for improvement. It makes me feel we can play even better, win more convincingly, and get more points—and points are what matter most. So I think this phase is very exciting.
I have to ask you about your former club's current situation. It's a difficult time for them. Over the past few weeks, there's been a lot of discussion following some significant announcements. Now that you've been a Newcastle player for just a few weeks, how do you experience this as an outside observer?
It's difficult for me because, honestly, I have mixed feelings. I genuinely wish them success—not just my former teammates, but everyone who works there. I spent a year and a half there and built bonds and relationships with many people. On a personal level, I'll always wish them the best. But obviously, I'm just a player. I can't say what punishment should or shouldn't be imposed. So on a personal level, I can only wish the best for those I worked with. But regarding the club itself, I don't know what to say because I don't know all the circumstances. I'm just an outside observer, so I can't really comment.
Still, I imagine it's also a difficult time for those players, who are also your friends, isn't it?
Yes. I think it's a situation I've always disliked—not knowing what the future holds. So of course, I feel for them. And not just the players, but also some staff members and people working behind the scenes; I feel for them too. Because I think this must be a very difficult situation for everyone.
