Benfica have beaten AC Milan for the first time in a competitive clash after they claimed a 2-0 win at San Siro.

Match Report 

Jakub Kaminski assisted Dodi Lukebakio's opener before getting on the scoresheet himself after the break to secure a winning start to Benfica's 2026-27 Europa League campaign.

Lukebakio forced Mike Maignan into a simple save in the 15th minute, but he managed to get the better of the Milan goalkeeper just 66 seconds later after cutting in from the right wing and curling into the bottom-right corner.

Heorhiy Sudakov hit the woodwork soon after, pouncing on a poor pass from Ardon Jashari, while Anatoliy Trubin was alert at the other end to palm away a stinging drive from Yunus Musha.

Ruben Amorim introduced Christian Pulisic at the break and Milan made a strong start to the second half, with Koni De Winter slicing a good chance wide of the right post.

But Benfica scored against the run of play in the 52nd minute as Kaminski turned in from Souffian El Karouani's drilled cross.

Pulisic saw a first-time effort parried to safety by Trubin as the Rossoneri also introduced Diego Moreira and Adrien Rabiot in search of an unlikely comeback, though the latter could not test the goalkeeper with his header from Pulisic's free-kick.

Early pressure mounting on Amorim?

Milan will perhaps feel they deserved more after accumulating 0.96 expected goals (xG) to Benfica's 0.64, but their opponent's clinical edge means the Rossoneri are now winless in three consecutive games across all competitions (D2 L1), and Amorim could be feeling the heat early in his tenure.

Former Benfica striker Goncalo Ramos failed to hit the target with any of his three shots, which were the most of any Milan player, while Samuel Chukwueze's four created chances (match-high) did not result in any goals.

Instead, Benfica have finally defeated the team they lost to in the 1963 and 1990 European Cup finals, and have Kaminski to thank for their three points.

The 24-year-old led his team in xG (0.22), chances created (three) and possessions won in the final third (two), while also making the joint-most passes in the final third (13) as Benfica made the most of their 39.6% possession.

Up next in the Europa League for Milan is a trip to Salzburg, while Benfica, who are on an eight-game winning run across all competitions, host Celtic.
