Diego Simeone said LaLiga's referees must be respected following Jose Mourinho's astonishing rant in the aftermath of Atletico Madrid's win over Real Madrid. 

Atleti earned a huge 2-1 victory over their cross-city rivals at the Estadio Metropolitano, with Dean Huijsen's 52nd-minute red card proving costly for Los Blancos.

Huijsen received his marching orders for a last-man foul on Giuliano Simeone, and after Alejandro Grimaldo scored the resulting penalty, Jonathan David doubled Los Colchoneros' advantage. 

Antonio Rudiger's late goal was not enough to spark a Madrid fightback, and Mourinho then brought printed images of what he felt were contentious decisions to his post-match press conference.

Mourinho claimed Lee Kang-in and Cristian Romero both got away with "clear red cards" and slammed the decision to appoint Miguel Angel Ortiz Arias as the referee for the game, while Madrid issued a statement slamming the performance of the officials. 

When asked about those comments by DAZN, Simeone initially refused to answer before making a wider observation about the treatment of referees.

"They are moments in the match. Sometimes they benefit you, sometimes they disadvantage you," Simeone said. 

"The director of the referees explained that the play by Cuti [Romero] was not a red card. I am not going to go into more detail. 

"What I do understand is that respect for the referees... I think we have to sustain that, because if not, there is nothing. Not everything goes, even if your name is Mourinho."

Atleti have now won back-to-back home derbies in LaLiga for the first time since January 1977.

The hosts had nine shots on target on Sunday, their most in any league match against Madrid under Simeone.

One frustrating moment for Simeone came when Julian Alvarez was jeered by sections of the home support, having been introduced in place of David in the 62nd minute.

Alvarez pushed for a move to Barcelona during the summer transfer window, but Atleti's hierarchy said they would not entertain a deal with the Catalan giants at any price.

Simeone now wants to see Alvarez build bridges with Atleti's supporters, particularly with fellow striker Alexander Sorloth out injured.

He said of the Argentina international: "We want him, we need him. We are putting together a team with a lot of work, enthusiasm and desire, and he is a very important player. 

"We are missing Sorloth too and we need him. Jonathan is doing us a lot of good. It makes me happy to see him – he is the player we went looking for."
