Former Tottenham manager Tim Sherwood has told MaxFreeBets that Tottenham fans would accept Roberto De Zerbi's sacking if it meant Mauricio Pochettino's return.

Sherwood believes the pressure on De Zerbi is mounting as Tottenham's heavy summer spending has failed to deliver results. Tottenham sits bottom of the Premier League after five matches without a win, having scored just two goals. The club spent over £400 million in the summer to bring in 10 players.

Following weekend betting market movements, De Zerbi has become the bookmakers' favorite to be the next Premier League manager sacked, ahead of Manchester United's Erik ten Hag and Fulham's Marco Silva.

Under Pochettino, the club achieved its most consistent results in over five years, reaching the Champions League final before his dismissal in 2019, less than six months after that final.

Six years later, Tottenham ended its trophy drought by winning the Europa League under Ange Postecoglou. However, that season marked the beginning of two consecutive campaigns where Tottenham finished 17th. With a poor start to the current season, relegation fears have grown, and Opta predicts Tottenham could go down.

Sherwood believes that although De Zerbi appears to retain Tottenham fans' support, they would prefer Pochettino. He said: "Tottenham fans would choose Pochettino over De Zerbi, but this squad is completely different. Pochettino did well in the past, but the team he managed then was different from now; that squad looked more like a genuine Champions League-caliber team, and ultimately, he couldn't win any trophies."

Sherwood also said: "I enjoyed Pochettino's time at Tottenham. He helped the club finish second, third, and reach the Champions League final—one step away. Tottenham fans would accept those results now, but this squad is completely different from the one he managed; everything depends on the circumstances. If Tottenham keeps investing money, anyone could succeed here."

He added: "I can think of many managers who would love to have a club spend £400 million on the squad in preseason, and many would be winning with a squad like that. Tottenham fans would now accept Pochettino's past achievements, but this squad is completely different from the one he left."
