According to Sport's reporting, Atlético Madrid's right-back Marc Pübel had the opportunity to join Barcelona for €5 million in 2023, but the club was unable to complete the transfer due to financial difficulties. Despite his youth at the time, Pübel's value has since risen to approximately €40 million.

Marc Pübel has become one of the fastest-rising prospects in the transfer market, thanks to his impressive development. The Atlético Madrid right-back has become an indispensable player at Simeone's side and earned caps for Spain's national team. His qualities align well with Barcelona's playing style, and the club came close to signing him on two separate occasions, though the deals ultimately fell through.

Notably, Barcelona could only afford to offer €5 million for Pübel, but the club hesitated due to his youth. Later, Barcelona's financial constraints prevented any agreement. Pübel has been highly praised by Barcelona's sporting leadership and remains a trusted prospect for European elite defense. Barcelona had a golden opportunity in 2023. At just 20 years old, Pübel was impressing at Levante, which desperately needed to generate revenue through player sales. Already a Spain U21 international attracting interest from numerous clubs, Pübel was recommended to Barcelona by sporting director Deco in his first summer. Though the transfer fee was €5 million, Barcelona chose to prioritize signing an experienced fullback for Xavi's plans.

Barcelona waited until the end of the summer transfer window and eventually signed João Cancelo on loan from Manchester City. Pübel himself moved to Almería that same summer for a €5 million fee, with Levante retaining a 20% sell-on clause on any future transfer.

It proved to be a perfect deal for the Andalusian club. Pübel performed excellently during his time there and eventually left for a multi-million euro transfer fee. In fact, Barcelona attempted to sign Pübel for a second time in the summer of 2024 while he was still at Almería. However, Barcelona faced severe financial constraints and salary cap pressures at that time. After Pübel's failed €16 million move to Atlante, Barcelona saw an opportunity to intervene.

Barcelona made a disappointing offer for a loan deal with a purchase option. While Almería would have received approximately €12 million total, the payments would have been spread over two seasons, so they rejected the offer. Pübel spent a season in the second division. During that time, he fully committed to playing for Barcelona. With Konde already featuring on the right flank and Barcelona having other priorities, the club abandoned efforts to sign Pübel.

By 2025, Atlético Madrid seized the opportunity and sealed a strategic agreement with evidence to prove it. Atlético Madrid signed Pübel for €12 million plus an additional €7 million in add-ons, with some add-ons already triggered. With Pübel currently valued at €40 million and continuing to rise, Atlético Madrid is certain to profit from this deal.

Marc Pübel shares similarities with Iván Fresneda. In 2023, Fresneda was another right-back recommended to Barcelona, though his transfer fee was under €10 million at the time. The former Valladolid player eventually moved to Sporting CP, where his value increased and he secured a place in the Spain national team. Like Pübel, he is among the right-backs highly praised and continually monitored by Barcelona's sporting leadership.

In fact, Portuguese sources confirmed that Barcelona has inquired about Fresneda for future transfer windows, and his name remains on Deco's list for defensive reinforcements. Barcelona is well aware of both right-backs' qualities and had closely monitored them, though they harbored doubts. Barcelona believed that signing them at that time would be risky—the players were very young, lacked extensive international experience, and would face elite competition. Now they have matured into top-tier players... but at this stage, signing them will be considerably more difficult.
