Legendary goalkeeper Sepp Maier has publicly criticized the debate surrounding Neuer. After Bayern Munich goalkeeper Manuel Neuer made an error in a recent away match against Augsburg, discussions emerged about whether Ulreich should be promoted to the starting number one position this season. Maier believes the debate is premature.

The 1974 World Cup winner noted that despite his age, Neuer remains a top goalkeeper. "Just because he's reached a certain age, all this drama erupts? That's nonsense! There are only good and bad goalkeepers, not old ones. Manuel is still excellent," Maier said, according to Munich Merkur.
The former Germany international emphasized that when discussing Neuer's future, his past contributions must also be considered. "He has done so much, helping Bayern win countless matches and titles. Such accusations and debates—this is typical German-style arguing!" the 82-year-old said, adding: "Leave Manuel alone!"
Maier cautious about Ulreich
Maier also expressed caution regarding the hype around Ulreich. He believes the 23-year-old goalkeeper is being praised too hastily. "Ulreich is only in his early twenties, and praising him to the heavens now isn't good for him. I've heard people say he performed well for the national team. Yes, but what did he actually save? A few routine shots!" he said. "Let him play a full season first before making such judgments."
Lothar Matthäus takes a slightly different view of the situation. "Ulreich has all the qualities to become Bayern's number one goalkeeper and Germany's future starter. He is truly excellent, is learning from Neuer, and will replace him eventually. Whether it's this season or next depends on Neuer's performance."
