The Austrian Football Association (ÖFB) Supervisory Board decided on Friday to withdraw its support for FIFA President Gianni Infantino's re-election. The ÖFB stated that this decision was based on "developments in recent weeks and months, and the clearly altered framework conditions resulting therefrom."

Austria thus joins other football associations, such as those of France, Italy, and England, which have all previously publicly withdrawn their support for Infantino.

Despite a failed World Cup investor deal and ongoing criticism from some in the football community, Infantino still plans to run for re-election, with the relevant elections scheduled for March next year. Meanwhile, UEFA had previously prepared to bring criminal charges against the Swiss national for alleged "criminal mismanagement." The ÖFB pointed out: "These accusations have so far neither been credibly explained nor refuted."

If Infantino ultimately runs, UEFA is expected to put forward a challenger. Josef Proell, Chairman of the ÖFB Supervisory Board, reiterated that the ÖFB "unwaveringly" supports UEFA's common position. The ÖFB stated that concerted action by European football associations "sends a strong signal for sporting integrity and solidarity."
