Porro has become one of Spain's key players heading into the 2026 World Cup, but behind this success lies a story of struggle that the Extremaduran defender will never forget.

Before reaching the top, his family endured severe financial hardship to allow him to continue pursuing his football dream. The player recalled his early years, marked by family struggles, in an interview with ABC.

"My childhood was very difficult, mainly due to economic problems; my family's situation wasn't good. We faced a lot of financial pressure," he explained.

His parents' work meant his grandparents became central figures in his childhood. When his parents were at work, his grandparents were responsible for looking after him and supporting him through daily life. "My mother worked at Tesco, and my father took whatever work he could find, so I lived with my grandparents," he said.

The player also remembers his mother often having to leave for work before dawn. "My mother would drop me off at my grandparents' house when she went to work at 3, 4, or 5 in the morning," he recalled.

As a child, he didn't always understand it all. "I often cried, not wanting to leave my grandparents, and she understood that," he said, speaking of that time full of family sacrifice.

As he grew older, the player increasingly understood the efforts his family made to fulfil his dream, especially his grandfather. When his parents couldn't take him to training and matches, his grandfather often stepped in to pick him up and drop him off: "I was really very lucky because my grandfather, that hardworking old man, always took me to play football and helped me achieve my dream."

One of his most vivid memories is the lengths his family went to support him: "We had a match in Alcobendas around 10 AM, and I remember there was no other way. I can't forget it to this day. After the match, after we won, I contacted my family, and they told me they had arrived five hours earlier than me and were sleeping in the car waiting."

When Porro moved to Madrid to join Rayo Vallecano's youth academy, he had to adapt to a new life away from home and balance football and studies differently. "To achieve a dream, some sacrifices simply have to be made. I didn't really love studying because all I thought about was football; I was incredibly obsessed with it," he said.

Now, 26 years old, the defender still clearly remembers those who were with him from the beginning. Pedro Porro knows that his success is also the result of his family's efforts, especially his grandfather's: "All the effort he put in back then, I want to repay in the best way I can."
