According to Globo Esporte, Ronaldo only gets along with Luiz Felipe Scolari and Roberto Martínez, neither of whom are Portuguese.

This isn't the first time Ronaldo has experienced turbulent moments in his relationships with Portuguese coaches. The conflict with Jorge Jesus is just one of many in the superstar's long history of clashes with coaches over his 20-year tenure with the national team. Globo Esporte has compiled some of the most representative incidents below.
Ronaldo made his debut for the Portuguese national team in August 2003 against Kazakhstan. The coach at the time was Brazilian Luiz Felipe Scolari. Over the next 20 years, the forward also worked with five other coaches: Carlos Queiroz, Paulo Bento, Fernando Santos, Roberto Martínez, and Jorge Jesus.
Ronaldo only avoided conflict with Scolari and Martínez. Coincidentally, neither of them is Portuguese.
After working with Scolari for over five years, Ronaldo began working with Carlos Queiroz. Queiroz had previously spent four years as Sir Alex Ferguson's assistant coach at Manchester United, where Ronaldo was playing at the time.
Queiroz succeeded Scolari partly because of his good relationship with Ronaldo; he was even seen by some as a mentor to the forward. However, their relationship began to deteriorate two years later. The most notable incident occurred at the 2010 World Cup. After Portugal was eliminated by Spain in the Round of 16, Ronaldo criticized the team's performance to reporters.
Even before this statement, their relationship was already strained, but these words completely widened the rift. According to Portuguese media reports, the player was dissatisfied with the coach's selections and the team's tactics. Ronaldo, who was named FIFA World Player of the Year in 2008, scored only one goal in four matches at the 2010 World Cup. Carlos Queiroz defended the team's performance despite the low goal output. The two did not speak when they met again at the 2018 World Cup.
Paulo Bento was Ronaldo's coach during his time at Sporting's youth academy. When Scolari coached the national team, Bento was recommended to join the senior Portuguese coaching staff. Initially, their relationship was indeed good. Portugal reached the semi-finals of Euro 2012 and qualified for the 2014 World Cup through the European play-offs.
Years later, Paulo Bento admitted that their relationship deteriorated over time. According to his statement to Antena 1, hierarchical issues greatly contributed to this. During the 2014 World Cup, the coach was criticized for hindering the team's youth development, and Ronaldo scored only one goal before Portugal's elimination. Ronaldo's positioning on the field also became a source of conflict.
"If you ask me if there were situations directly against me, I would say no. If he had conflicts with management, that's something I don't want to believe. Roles shouldn't be reversed; in a hierarchy, that would turn everything upside down. No matter how talented a player is, they cannot influence the decisions of the club or federation; it makes no sense," Paulo Bento said when he was dismissed, at a time when it was speculated that Ronaldo might have influenced his departure.
Both Carlos Queiroz and Paulo Bento were dismissed during international breaks, when Ronaldo was unavailable due to injury. Fernando Santos, Portugal's longest-serving coach, left his position shortly after the 2022 World Cup.
During that World Cup, Ronaldo was benched, and this incident became the last significant moment of tension between them. However, Ronaldo and Fernando Santos had maintained a strong relationship for many years. Together, they won the 2016 European Championship, which was the pinnacle of the forward's international career, and they also won the 2019 Nations League.
There were also some negative episodes in subsequent years. In 2021, against Serbia and Belgium, Ronaldo, dissatisfied with referee decisions and the results, threw his captain's armband onto the pitch. This action strained his relationship with the coach.
In 2022, Ronaldo was substituted during every group stage match and was relegated to the bench during the knockout phase. Fernando Santos was displeased with the player's public comments. The coach left the national team after eight years in charge and over 100 matches, and Ronaldo did not post a farewell message.
