Zirkzee scored the winning goal in the Netherlands' 2-1 victory over Serbia, a performance that impressed Dutch 1974 World Cup legend Willem van Hanegem.

Van Hanegem said: "Technically, he is one of the best strikers I know. A player can sometimes be the missing piece of the puzzle, but then for two whole years be considered not good enough at all. That's a tough situation for a player. Sometimes that's just how it is."

This was Zirkzee's first return to the Netherlands national team squad since late 2024, and his inclusion coincided with the appointment of new coach Xavi.

Zirkzee has not started a single game for Man United this season. His situation was quite difficult before the international break.

His inclusion and goal have slightly improved the situation. This is Zirkzee's first competitive goal since returning to the squad and will help boost his confidence.
