The red card shown to Vinicius by referee Díaz de Mera at the Santiago Bernabéu on Saturday continues to spark debate. The Real Madrid No. 7 was sent off for pulling Nathan Saliba's hair before what would have been a goal to make it 2-0. This action angered Real Madrid fans and has prompted continued comments from various football figures.

"I think it was a very bad, dirty, and despicable move. I think it's like what would happen when we played football on the playground as kids, and it would end in a fight. Because it's the Bernabéu, because it's Vinicius, and because it ended in a goal, this incident has been amplified, but there's no controversy at all; it's a standard red card," explained former Barcelona player Gerard Piqué on Movistar Plus.
Different opinions were heard during the same discussion program on Sunday evening. Among them, Jorge Valdano offered another perspective. He considered the action an "instinctive reaction" and did not see Vinicius intentionally trying to harm his opponent.
"I would distinguish between, for example, spitting and this action. This was a completely instinctive action. He saw the opponent approaching and sought to create distance in the most unconventional way he could think of, but I don't see any malicious intent or how dirty the action was," explained the Argentine, former player, former coach, and former Real Madrid sporting director.
