Catalan police announced on Monday that the Mossos d'Esquadra had dismantled a criminal gang in Gavà, Barcelona province, that specialized in violent home burglaries targeting individuals with "high public profiles," such as footballers. The gang had been active in several Catalan municipalities since early 2025.
The operation, launched on October 1, led to the arrest of two men (aged 58 and 42) and a 46-year-old woman. The three are linked to at least eight cases that occurred in Castelldefels (two cases), El Papiol, Sant Vicenç de Montalt, Cubelles, Peralada, Sant Pere de Ribes, and Agullana.
According to La Vanguardia and confirmed by police sources to EFE, one of the most prominent cases was the theft at the home of Barcelona goalkeeper Iñaki Peña. On January 10, two suspects broke into the home he shared with his partner in a municipality in the Baix Llobregat region of Barcelona province.
Investigators also determined that the gang had surveilled and reconnoitered the home of Peña's teammate Koundé, but ultimately did not carry out the burglary.
Two of the three arrested individuals were brought before the judiciary the day after their arrest. The three collectively have more than thirty prior convictions, many of which involve property crimes.
The investigation began due to the highly similar modus operandi of several burglaries across Catalonia. These cases shared common characteristics in target selection and methods, all targeting the homes of individuals with "high public profiles."
Investigators identified a fixed gang that typically used rented vehicles and conducted preliminary reconnaissance before committing crimes, analyzing the victims' movements and home characteristics.
The discovered links to other cases and the mobility of the suspects led investigators to believe that the gang might also be responsible for burglaries in other parts of Spain. Therefore, the investigation is ongoing, and the possibility of uncovering additional criminal acts is not ruled out.
