West Bromwich Albion are poised to sign Bury defender Saul Shotton this week.

The 18-year-old became a free agent following Bury's expulsion from the league earlier this month.

Sheffield Wednesday, Preston North End and Derby County all made offers for Shotton but he has agreed a two-year contract with Albion and will join later this week.

The centre-back, formerly of Stoke City, made two EFL Trophy appearances two months before his 17th birthday.

Shotton started Bury's final four games of the 2017-18 season, but did not feature under manager Ryan Lowe last season.

He automatically became a free agent when Bury were expelled from the league last month when the PFA informed Shakers players that their contracts ceased to be legally binding.
