According to British media outlet talkSPORT, FIFA World Cup fever has swept across the United States. This summer's football tournament, held across the East and West Coasts, has already set a group-stage attendance record.

A total of 46,445,549 fans attended the first 72 matches in the United States, Canada, and Mexico, surpassing the previous record of 3,587,538 by more than a million.

The US men's national team's 2-0 victory over Bosnia and Herzegovina in the Round of 16 on Wednesday night became the most-watched football broadcast in English-language television history, drawing over 24.4 million viewers on Fox.

According to data released by the broadcaster, peak viewership reached 31.8 million.

This match surpassed the English-language television viewership figures for the 2015 Women's FIFA World Cup final, which attracted 22.3 million viewers.

The US men's national team's first FIFA World Cup knockout-stage win since 2002 set a football viewership record, but it still lags far behind the most-watched Super Bowl in history.

In that 2025 game, an average of 127.7 million viewers watched the Philadelphia Eagles defeat the Kansas City Chiefs across Fox, Fox Deportes, Telemundo, and Tubi.

Peak viewership for the second quarter of that game reached 137.7 million.

While the NFL continues to dominate television viewership, Wednesday's unprecedented football broadcast audience nearly matched the 24.4 million average viewers for Game 5 of the NBA Finals, in which the New York Knicks clinched the championship last month.

It also approached the nearly 26 million viewers who watched Game 7 of last fall's World Series, when the Los Angeles Dodgers defeated the Toronto Blue Jays.

While a record number of people watched the US men's national team win their first knockout game in over two decades, that figure could be surpassed by two different teams by Sunday night.

As the FIFA World Cup heats up, more TV records could be broken.

Mexico will face England on Sunday night in a highly anticipated Round of 16 clash.

The match will be played under difficult conditions at Estadio Azteca in Mexico City, which Richard Deitsch, host of The Sports Media Podcast, believes could have a significant impact on domestic TV viewership in the US.

Deitsch posted on social media: "Mexico vs. England is going to be amazing, and it is also a very interesting sports media story."

Mexico is Fox's second-highest-rated team; Fox has mentioned this multiple times, and the Spanish-language TV numbers are going to be enormous.

England also has a huge fan base in the US. This game kicks off at 8 PM ET on Sunday night, which is prime time at its strongest.

England's Round of 16 match in Mexico is expected to surpass the US men's national team's record.

For a game that doesn't involve the US men's national team, viewership will be remarkably high.

Deitsch did not predict how many people would watch, but if a prime-time FIFA World Cup match on Sunday night features two teams with strong fan bases, new television history would not be surprising.

Before the US men's national team played in the Round of 16, Michael Mulvihill, President of Insights and Analytics at Fox, predicted that 30 million people would watch the game.

The peak viewership exceeded expectations, and he also predicted that if the US team reached the FIFA World Cup final, viewership could reach 50 million.
