Manchester United and Brighton both face lengthy injury lists ahead of their Carabao Cup clash at Old Trafford on Wednesday night

Manchester United and Brighton will go head-to-head in the Carabao Cup this week, but both teams will have to deal with several injury concerns. The Red Devils will host the Seagulls at Old Trafford in the third round of the League Cup, with a place in the next round up for grabs for both teams.

United were on the receiving end of a 1-0 defeat to Manchester City in the Premier League at the weekend, with Erling Haaland scoring a controversial goal in the Manchester derby.

Michael Carrick will now be focused on the Carabao Cup after spending the last few weeks prioritising the Premier League and Champions League, with both United and Brighton dealing with injury concerns.

United were missing Luke Shaw for the City defeat on Sunday, with the left-back now having sat out the previous two fixtures due to injury.

Carrick indicated that he is hopeful Shaw will be fit to take on Brighton, though he stopped short of confirming it.

"He could possibly be fit for Brighton, but it's not clear-cut," Carrick told reporters on Tuesday. "But it's a matter of a few days rather than anything else."

Carlos Baleba has also been absent throughout the campaign so far, having joined United from Brighton earlier in the summer.

Baleba remains out with an ankle problem sustained during his spell with the Seagulls, and while he is edging towards fitness, he will be unavailable to feature against his previous employers.

"He'll be back in and around the group at some point over the next week or so," Carrick said. "So that means, after the internationals, he should be in good shape."

United will also be without Amad Diallo and Matthijs de Ligt, with both players on the road to recovery.

Amad sustained an injury before the campaign began, while De Ligt has been out of action with a back problem since last November.

"Amad, not quite close in terms of days, but we'll see as the week progresses," said Carrick. "And Matta's [De Ligt] just working his way back, really, so because of the time frame and how it's been, I don't really want to put too much time frame on it."

Manuel Ugarte and Tom Heaton will likewise be ruled out for United's encounter with Brighton.

As for the Seagulls, they face a substantial injury list ahead of their journey to Old Trafford this week.

Stefanos Tzimas remains unlikely to feature for Brighton, with the forward currently nursing a muscle injury, and Brighton manager Fabian Hurzeler confirming he experienced a "setback" during his rehabilitation.

Yankuba Minteh and Evan Ferguson are long-term casualties for the Seagulls and will not be available in the near future.

Kaoru Mitoma, Jack Hinshelwood and Mats Wieffer are edging towards comebacks from their respective injuries, but aren't anticipated to return until following the international break.

Brighton are optimistic about having Georginio Rutter available against United, after the player has been absent through injury since the Premier League season's opening day. Femi Azeez could be in line to return from a muscle injury when United come to town, though there remains a question mark over the availability of Michael Svoboda.
