According to Foot Mercato, Beşiktaş player Amir Murillo has spoken about why he left Marseille, and Benatia has responded to his comments.

Amir Murillo spoke at a pre-match press conference: "Everyone can see there were issues between me and the coach. This has nothing to do with the club or the team. I think it was just some personal actions from the coach, and in some way, I felt that was disrespectful. They essentially forced me to leave the club, and that's how I ended up at Beşiktaş."
Benatia later responded on Canal+: "It's too easy to say these things now, anyway everyone has gone their separate ways. I remember what he said, and it was those things that brought him to this level. I remember when he first arrived from Anderlecht—he was a backup player. He always worked very hard and was a great guy. We were somewhat concerned about the situation at the time. I think he also lost the confidence of some teammates; he had some very difficult matches last season, and I can recall many matches where he was responsible for some goals conceded and his performances were somewhat careless. And all this happened after he signed his contract extension. What he's not saying is that De Zerbi pressured us in front of everyone in the meeting room to extend his contract because he said Murillo is his son. He really liked Murillo and developed him into an important player. After that, there were many instances of negligence, and the coach decided to look elsewhere. We wanted to resolve this by letting Murillo pursue other projects. However, he's still a good guy, and I don't want to criticize him; he never played dirty. Perhaps he didn't even realize it himself—it was unconscious negligence."
