Former Premier League star Deeney has criticised Garnacho's recent performances on a podcast, arguing that he needs to take a hard look at himself.

Garnacho joined Aston Villa this summer, becoming his third club in three years after spells at Chelsea and Manchester United.

However, the Argentine winger has had a difficult start at Villa, failing to feature in any of his three appearances for the club.

Garnacho was absent from Villa's 3-1 Carabao Cup third-round victory over Coventry on Thursday morning (UK time).

When asked why Garnacho didn't play, Villa manager Emery said the winger had fallen behind academy prospects George Hemmings and Alison in the pecking order.

However, Deeney disagreed with Emery's assessment on talkSPORT's Premier League show.

Deeney said: "I think Emery is the type of manager who wants to get players in line quickly and get them back on track, and he's willing to take that risk."

"He believes the team is strong enough for Garnacho to integrate and catch up with his teammates in training and playing style."

"But ultimately, I said this when he was at Chelsea. You remember, he wanted to leave Manchester United and join Chelsea, thinking everything would be better and all the problems were at United."

"He went to Chelsea, didn't play, turned around and left, and now all the problems are at Chelsea."

"One day, maybe the problem is just you."

"I don't know that kid, and I never want to know him. He's not my type of person. But maybe, just maybe, the real problem is you."
