Mikel Arteta was left bitterly disappointed by Arsenal's shock loss to Brighton, but urged his team to learn lessons from a "painful" experience.

Brighton cruised to a 3-0 victory over the reigning Premier League champions at the Amex Stadium, where Pascal Gross, Charalampos Kostoulas and Chema Andres were on target.

It capped off a fantastic week for Brighton, who beat Manchester United in the EFL Cup and previously thrashed Coventry City 5-0.

But Arteta feels the defeat can spur Arsenal on.

He told BBC Match of the Day: "First of all, congratulations to Brighton.

"I am really disappointed. In the first 20 or 30 minutes, the number of technical errors put us constantly under pressure. It was all related to the start.

"It's a big lesson to learn. What the team has done since the World Cup has been remarkable. But there is a lot to learn.

"Credit to Brighton for what they have done. I think we were very far from our level. The international break means we have more time to swallow because it's very, very painful. In any game, you can get highly exposed if you don't do what you need to do."

This was Arsenal's biggest league defeat in a season where they were the reigning top-flight champions since October 1989, a 3-0 loss at Everton.

Indeed, Arsenal suffered their biggest Premier League defeat since May 2023, which was also against Brighton (0-3 at Emirates Stadium).

"Brighton deserved to win the game," Arteta said on BBC Radio 5 Live.

"We didn't do the basics right for long periods, especially in the first half. We didn't win enough duels, and any second balls and that stretches you. With the errors that we made, and especially with the principles we didn't apply, against a team that wants to press you.

"So that puts us constantly under pressure, and [we] didn't get out of that in the way we normally do. So a lot of things to learn and take, but ultimately disappointed.

"We were below the standards that are required for us."

Arsenal's first game back after the international break sees them host Leeds United on October 10.
