According to Bild, after Mainz 05's 4-2 away victory against Borussia Mönchengladbach, Sky Sports pundit Dietmar Hamann criticized Amiri for deliberately stomping on the penalty spot and called for a one-match suspension.

Amiri attempted to damage the penalty spot before Kevin Dicka took the penalty, which Dicka subsequently missed. Commenting on the incident, Hamann said: "This has nothing to do with sportsmanship."

After reviewing the footage, Hamann stated: "A one-match ban! I would suspend him for one game!"

Hamann continued: "He is a national team player and very important to the team. But we must eliminate such behavior from football. Kids are watching. I'm not even talking about being a role model. This kind of thing simply cannot happen! If the referee had seen it, he would have punished him. He probably only did it after making sure the referee wasn't looking."

Hamann concluded: "We must start punishing such behavior! It's not only unsportsmanlike, it's a serious violation of the spirit of the game! We must do everything possible to ensure that players don't even consider doing something like this."
