According to journalist Fabrizio Romano, Barcelona has not completely abandoned the possibility of signing Julián Alvarez, and discussions could resurface in 2027.

Barcelona sporting director Deco stated recently that the Argentine forward is already in Barcelona's past. Barcelona had attempted to sign him but ultimately failed. However, Romano claims that Barcelona's interest in Alvarez still exists, and circumstances could change in the future.

Romano stated: "Barcelona believes they have built a top team and don't want any distractions right now. When Deco said Julián was in the past, he meant that we had been discussing him all summer. Enough—let's focus on this season."

Romano pointed out that both Barcelona and the player need to concentrate on their performance this season, with the topic potentially resurfacing in 2027. He added: "This doesn't mean Barcelona has completely erased Alvarez from their minds. Deco simply wants to say: focus on this season for now—for Barcelona, Atlético Madrid, and Julián alike. What happens in the future, especially in 2027? We'll see."

Romano believes Deco's statement is a tactical communication aimed at preventing distractions in the Barcelona dressing room and quashing rumors during the season. Barcelona made significant investments in the transfer market this summer with high expectations, so the club wants players to avoid speculation.

Currently, Alvarez has not started in any of the eight league matches he has played for Atlético Madrid, only starting in the Champions League match against Liverpool. If this situation persists, his market value could decline. Barcelona is not pursuing him now and has no plans to do so in January to avoid further complications.

Deco stated: "Julián was not possible at that time. We looked for solutions, and Gabriel was the perfect choice for us. But Julián is in the past now—we must look forward." Officially, this is the club's current position, but only time will tell.
