Ahead of Lionel Messi's farewell match for Argentina, Josep Pedrerol's El Chiringuito program analyzed his career. Tomás Roncero, a journalist for AS, was among the sharpest critics. He stated: "Messi is a great player, but far from being the player people make him out to be."

Roncero emphasized that Messi "didn't invent football" and recalled several key matches in which Messi performed poorly: "Where was he when Bayern scored 8 goals? Where was he when Liverpool scored 4 goals? Where was he when Manolas's team conceded 3 goals in that round?"

The El Chiringuito guest claimed that sports media supporting Barcelona "embellished" Messi's failures. He said: "They were obsessed with him because they thought Barcelona would completely collapse without him."

Roncero stated on the program: "Over five years from 2014 to 2018, we won 4 Champions Leagues. At that time, both Cristiano Ronaldo and Messi were in their prime, constantly competing, but Messi kept losing."

Discussing whether Messi is the greatest player of all time, Roncero was unequivocal: "The greatest players of all time are Di Stéfano, Pelé, Cruyff, Zidane, and Maradona—and even before Messi, there is Cristiano Ronaldo."
