After Messi played his final national team match, Atletico Madrid's official social media posted a photo of Messi placing the national team captain's armband on Cristian Romero's arm and congratulated Messi on his national team career.

Atletico Madrid's official social media wrote: "Cuti (Romero's nickname) takes the Argentina captain's armband. Congratulations to Messi on his career with the Argentina national team!"

In Argentina's 3-0 victory over Benin, Messi bid a perfect farewell with one goal and two assists, while Romero started as a central defender and played 79 minutes. With Messi and Otamendi retiring from the national team, Romero became the new captain of the Albiceleste.
