According to Goal.com, De Jong is experiencing a significant turning point in his Barcelona career. German coach Flick has begun experimenting with him at center-back, an arrangement that may reflect not just tactical adjustment but also consideration of his knee injury and midfield competition.

Journalist Santi Ovalle revealed on Cadena SER that after returning to full training, De Jong has been practicing in the center-back position, suggesting this option could be part of Flick's plans ahead.
According to Ovalle, there is a deeper reason behind this arrangement. Some medical assessments suggest the player may require surgery, warning that without it, his knee could remain unstable and potentially compromise his mobility on the pitch.
When playing in midfield, De Jong constantly needs to change direction, accelerate, and stop abruptly. These actions demand high knee stability. In contrast, playing center-back reduces the frequency of such movements, though it does not eliminate the physical demands of the position.
De Jong's move to center-back is not a spur-of-the-moment decision by Flick. Ahead of the Getafe match, Flick had already indicated this possibility, stating: "Of course, he can play there. We have many options, and De Jong is one of the options for center-back."
Health concerns are not the only factor. Midfield competition for De Jong is intensifying, with Bernal emerging as a viable option, and Barcelona possessing other key players in that area. Flick does not appear to view De Jong as a direct replacement for Pedri, which may prompt him to find a new role for De Jong to secure more playing time.
Real Betis, the window for his return
Recent signals regarding his recovery are positive. Flick stated that De Jong feels good in training and has no pain, and mentioned he might return for the Real Betis match, though he emphasized the club must give him sufficient time to regain match fitness.
The Barcelona coach said: "He might be available for the Betis game. He's in good shape and has no pain, but he needs time, and we will give it to him."
The Dutch player hopes to return to peak form before El Clásico against Real Madrid, but his return depends on his physical recovery and the technical staff's assessment.
Will the new position influence his future?
Transforming De Jong into a center-back raises questions about his Barcelona future. De Jong has spent most of his career in midfield and has been an important player in that position.
If he feels the new role diminishes his standing in midfield or does not suit his characteristics, it could influence his future decisions. There is also speculation about whether this positional adjustment reflects his prospects at the club. However, there is currently no information suggesting Barcelona is moving toward his departure.
The real test will come once De Jong has fully recovered. By then, Flick's selection choices will reveal whether this move to center-back is a long-term transformation or a temporary solution during his recovery phase and for the team's immediate needs.
