On 21 September, the Swiss national team officially announced that, following Granit Xhaka' s personal statement regarding proof of vaccination, he would not be taking part in the upcoming training camp for the Swiss men' s national football team. This decision was reached jointly by Xhaka and the management of the Swiss Football Association following discussions.

Peter Knäbel, President of the Swiss Football Association, said: “Granit Xhaka informed us of the situation last night and told us that he would respond publicly to the matter and take responsibility. We welcome Granit’s decision to take this step and address the issues head-on. At the same time, we are in agreement that, under the current circumstances, it is in the team’s best interests not to include him in this training camp. We now need to allow the situation to settle down and focus all our energy on the team and the upcoming UEFA Nations League fixtures.”

The Swiss national team assembled in Belek, Turkey, on Monday local time and will train there until Friday to prepare for their upcoming two away matches against North Macedonia and Scotland. On 3 and 6 October, Switzerland will also host Slovenia and North Macedonia in Lucerne.

Knäbel stated: “Once this international break is over, we will reassess the current situation together with Granit and discuss the next steps.”
