Former Liverpool and England midfielder Danny Murphy has discussed the potential penalties that Man City could face if found guilty on 114 of the 115 charges brought against them.

Danny Murphy believes that if Man City is found guilty on 114 of the 115 Premier League financial charges, the club could face a "triple punishment".

However, the former Liverpool midfielder argues that stripping any of the club's titles would be pointless.

Multiple media outlets have reported that an independent panel found Man City guilty on all but one of the 115 charges, which relate to alleged breaches of league regulations between 2009 and 2018.

The Premier League will now decide on appropriate sanctions. Reports indicate that the club was informed at a meeting on Thursday that the matter had been resolved.

Murphy said: "To be honest, I was genuinely shocked to hear they were found guilty on all but one charge, because they've always been very strong and consistently maintained their innocence.

"I hope they will appeal, and despite the reports, my feeling is that this process could drag on for quite a while.

"I don't think it makes sense to strip them of titles they've won, because awarding championships to runners-up years later won't satisfy their fans, players and staff who never got to experience lifting the trophy. So in my view, that would be pointless."

The investigation into Man City began in November 2018 after leaked documents emerged and continued throughout Pep Guardiola's tenure, coinciding with their sustained success in winning multiple major titles under his leadership. Guardiola left the club this summer after ten years.

During this period, Liverpool was their main domestic rival. The Reds won one Premier League title and finished with over 90 points on two occasions but were still surpassed by Man City.

Murphy added in an interview with Snabbare: "My sense is that the Premier League needs to handle this decisively, but they're in a difficult position because any relegation penalty would weaken the league's product and reduce its competitiveness.

"That said, I think it's quite likely they will relegate Man City to the Championship, impose some form of transfer ban, and issue a record fine to send a signal to world football.

"I think their most likely course of action is heavy point deductions in this season, along with a record fine and a transfer ban lasting one to two years."
