Former Tottenham Hotspur and England star Dele Alli revealed in a live broadcast that he was banned for life from Tesco as a youngster for shoplifting.

Recalling an incident from his childhood, Alli said that someone was driving him to football practice and asked him to stop at Tesco to buy some drinks. However, he stayed in the back seat and did not get out of the car, as he knew he was banned from the supermarket.

Alli said: "They'd be getting energy drinks and stuff for training. I was in the back, quiet, acting like I was a good kid or something. They were probably talking about school or whatever, and then they were like, 'Can you go in the shop?'

"They gave me money and said, 'Can you go and get some drinks?' I was just sitting there, still in the back seat, and didn't get out of the car. Thirty seconds passed, and they looked back, still chatting.

"They looked back again and asked me, 'Can you get the drinks?' I said, 'I can't.' They asked why. I said, 'I'm banned for life from there.' Because I used to steal everything from there, man."

Alli is currently a free agent and has been training with League Two side Barnet recently, hoping to revive his career.

After breaking through at Tottenham Hotspur, Alli was once considered one of England's most promising young players. He represented the Three Lions at Euro 2016 and the 2018 World Cup, with his last appearance for England coming in 2019.

Since then, Alli has played for Besiktas in Turkey and Como in Italy, managed by Cesc Fabregas.

In 2023, the former PFA Young Player of the Year spoke candidly in an interview with Gary Neville about his mental health issues, childhood trauma, and addiction struggles.
