Following the match against Portugal, several media outlets published an interview with Danish striker Højlund in which he was reported to have criticized Portugal's national team for not properly supporting Ronaldo. Højlund has now denied these claims.
Global Soccer Awards officially released an interview with Højlund, in which he clarified his intentions: "During the UEFA Nations League match between Denmark and Portugal, I scored for Denmark and celebrated by mimicking Ronaldo's iconic 'Siu' celebration.
Højlund then explained his celebration: 'I simply wanted to send a strong message to the Portuguese national team that even if they don't appreciate Ronaldo, there are many people around the world who do.'
He emphasized that the celebration was a tribute to his idol, not a mockery of the opposition, further demonstrating his continued admiration for the Portuguese star."
In response to the subsequent reports, Højlund commented: "I never said that."
